Dental Facts: Implant Parts and Tooth Names

Updated

A replacement tooth and the device supporting it are not the same part. These names help you describe a dental restoration before looking for an article about it.

An implant has more than a visible tooth

The FDA's implant overview distinguishes an implant body from its abutment and fixation screw. The body is placed in the jaw. The abutment supports the artificial tooth replacement above it.

Implant body
The supporting device in the jaw.
Abutment
A connecting component supporting the restoration.
Crown, bridge or denture
The tooth replacement supported by the device or attachment arrangement.

For one particular intermediate component, see where a multi-unit abutment sits. A healing abutment is a separate term to clarify when discussing the current treatment stage.

Natural-tooth names describe another subject

The name wisdom tooth refers to a third molar, not to an implant component. Use the component name or natural-tooth name that matches the question you want to ask.
